When you plan a day on the water, one question comes up again and again: should we book a houseboat or a yacht? Both are private, both come with a captain and crew, and both include soft drinks, water and speakers. But they feel very different on the day. This guide compares a houseboat in Abu Dhabi with a yacht, using real prices from our fleet, so you can pick the one that suits your plan.
The Short Answer
- Choose a houseboat if you want space, shade, a lounge to relax in and the lowest price per person for a big group.
- Choose a yacht if you want the classic cruising feel – open decks, a sleek boat and the sense of travelling along the coast.
The rest of this article explains why, and helps you decide when the answer is not so obvious.
What Is a Houseboat?
A houseboat is built for living space rather than speed. Think of a floating lounge: wide decks, indoor rooms, rooftop terraces and plenty of seating. Our four houseboats take from 12 to 20 guests:
- Floating Villa – up to 15 guests, AED 500 per hour: an air-conditioned living room, kitchenette, bedroom, bathroom and a rooftop lounge.
- Mirage Houseboat – up to 15 guests, AED 650 per hour: a cosy lounge, rooftop terrace and warm lights for evenings.
- Dune Houseboat – up to 20 guests, AED 750 per hour: two levels and a grass-deck lounge with string lights.
- Saffron Houseboat – up to 12 guests, AED 1,000 per hour: a glass-walled lounge and a rooftop deck.
What Is a Yacht?
A yacht is a motorboat built for cruising, with a sleek hull, open decks and usually a cabin below. Our yachts take from 8 to 20 guests:
- Sand Dollar – up to 8 guests, AED 450 per hour: a sport yacht with a cockpit lounge and a cabin.
- Falcon 40 – up to 10 guests, AED 649 per hour: a 40 ft yacht with a flybridge, aft deck and cabin.
- Tide Cruiser – up to 20 guests, AED 999 per hour: a large motor yacht with a flybridge and a foredeck sunbed.
Houseboat Abu Dhabi vs Yacht: Side by Side
| Houseboat | Yacht | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel of the trip | Relaxed, social, like a floating lounge | Classic cruise, open decks, sleek boat |
| Guests (our fleet) | 12 to 20 | 8 to 20 |
| Price per hour (our fleet) | AED 500 to AED 1,000 | AED 450 to AED 999 |
| Indoor space | Lounges and rooms, often air-conditioned | Cabin or salon below deck |
| Shade | Lots – roofs, canopies, indoor areas | Some – flybridge tops and cabins |
| Moving around | Easy, wide flat decks | Narrower side decks, steps between levels |
| Suits | Families, big parties, long chats | Sightseeing, photos, smaller celebrations |
Price per Person
Both houseboats and yachts are priced per hour for the whole boat, with a 2-hour minimum. The cost per person depends on how many guests you bring. Here is a 2-hour trip on a full boat:
| Boat | Type | Guests | 2 hours | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Floating Villa | Houseboat | 15 | AED 1,000 | AED 67 |
| Dune Houseboat | Houseboat | 20 | AED 1,500 | AED 75 |
| Mirage Houseboat | Houseboat | 15 | AED 1,300 | AED 87 |
| Tide Cruiser | Yacht | 20 | AED 1,998 | AED 100 |
| Sand Dollar | Yacht | 8 | AED 900 | AED 113 |
| Falcon 40 | Yacht | 10 | AED 1,298 | AED 130 |
For large groups, houseboats usually win on price per person. For small groups of up to 8, a small yacht like the Sand Dollar can be the more affordable choice, simply because you are not paying for space you do not need.
When to Choose a Houseboat
You have a big group
With 15 to 20 guests, a houseboat gives everyone room to sit, move and talk. The Dune Houseboat takes 20 guests, and the Floating Villa and Mirage Houseboat take 15.
You are bringing children or older relatives
Wide flat decks, shade and indoor lounges make houseboats easy for every age. The Floating Villa even has a bedroom and a bathroom, which helps on longer trips.
The plan is a party
Birthdays, engagements and get-togethers work well on a houseboat, because the boat itself is the venue. Lights on the Mirage, Dune and Saffron houseboats make evening parties feel special. See our party boats page for ideas.
It is a hot day
When the sun is strong, indoor and shaded space matters. Houseboats have far more of it than most yachts.
When to Choose a Yacht
You want the classic cruise
If you picture yourself on an open deck watching the skyline slide past, a yacht gives you that feeling. The Falcon 40 and the Tide Cruiser both have flybridges with views over the water.
Your group is small
For up to 8 guests, the Sand Dollar is the lowest-priced yacht in our fleet at AED 450 per hour – cheaper than any houseboat.
Photos matter
A sleek yacht makes a great backdrop, and the foredeck and flybridge give you open angles for group photos.
Still Not Sure?
Try this: write down your number of guests, your budget per hour and the main thing you want from the day – relaxing, partying, sightseeing or photos. Then open the Yacht Finder, set your group size and budget, and pick “Houseboat” or “Yacht” as the type. You will see every boat that fits, with prices. If two boats still look equally good, message us on WhatsApp with your plan and we will tell you how each one would work for your group.
You can also compare all ten boats in one table on our boats and prices page, or use the budget calculator to see the total for 2 to 8 hours.
